What the Mist Takes...
The Veil is a plane in the multi-verse that hangs in between the Far Realm and all the Material Planes. It is a place of death and war, between the aberrant creatures that call the Far Realm home and the valiant defenders that have been brought from all across time and space to defend existence. No one knows who brought these mortals, when the war started, or why it was these individuals were originally chosen, but life in The Veil is tough. Each day is a struggle to survive and more importantly hold the bastions against the onslaught of endless aberrant hordes. The defenders are not without allies though, and truly powerful creatures and prodigious heroes fight on their side. Even holding the defensive positions and having grand allies doesn’t prevent the random aberrant creature from slipping past the defenses and into the Material Planes, although up to this point the numbers that have gotten through are small and may present little threat to the fabric of reality.
An interesting phenomena has happened within the Veil. Mortals born with innate psionic abilities seem to be cursed with also bearing the burden of having a monster come into existence when they are born; a personal Tormentor. Some have hypothesized that it is the inherent instability of The Veil coupled with the abnormality of psionic abilities that bring these creatures into being. Others has posited that what started the war between the Far Realm and the Material Plane was that an ancient god stole the power of psionics from a powerful aberrant creature and gave it to his mortals in the Material Plane, and slighted that aberrant creature cursed all mortals with psionics to wake with a personal demon that would soon consume their existence, but the god, seeing the treachery protected all the beings of the Material Plane, except for those that reside in The Veil which follows as much the rules of the Material Planes as it does the Far Realm. While both theories are interesting and cause much speculation and argument in the Veil, in the end it doesn’t really matter. Tormentors are a real part of life in the Veil, and they aren’t going anywhere.
