What the Mist Takes...
Tormentor’s are one universal manifestation of a psion’s mental abilities in The Veil. Believed to be brought into existence at the birth of psion these creatures are generally only visible to the psion itself and start very weak. A Tormentor usually manifests even before any of the abilities the psion will grow into, and brings much pain and agony to the young psionic babies that they are linked with. Parents are often woken in the middle of the night to the terror filled screams of younglings woken by their personal demon and even though Tormentors attacks are purely psychic, welts and bites often are found on these young children. Many different approaches to keeping these Tormentors away from the young psions have been formulated, and although some do work, there is no sure way to save the agony that is inflicted. And while no baby or child has been known to be killed by their tormentor, the growing process does have the added benefit of making these kids tough, if not a little deranged.
Many young psions seek to defeat their Tormentor early on in their lives because not only is it seen as a great accomplishment but there are also many years of resentment pent up, a Tormentor can be a great burden on the battlefield; arising usually at the most inopportune time, and as the psion grows in power so does the Tormentor. Their are rumors that supremely powerful psions have died without defeating their Tormentor, and the latent energy brought from years of growth have caused the Tormentor to live past the death of their creator, becoming truly terrifying invisible juggernauts that can wipe out platoons of defenders in a single blow. Of course no one has ever seen these legends, but that doesn’t mean they don’t wander The Veil.
